Sugar Baby County Down

Down's sugar baby community spans the affluent north, Bangor, Holywood and the Ards, and the Mourne coast south to Newry. Verified profiles, free to browse, Irish-owned.

County Down is two markets that barely touch

North Down, meaning Bangor, Holywood, Newtownards and the Ards Peninsula, is Belfast's coastal commuter belt. It is affluent, it is well connected to the city by train, and it behaves like an extension of Belfast rather than a place of its own.

Newry, at the other end of the county, is closer to Dundalk than to Belfast and runs on cross-border trade and a large retail economy. It is a genuinely different market with a different population.

The most common mistake men make here is searching County Down as one area. It is not one area. Decide whether you are working the North Down commuter belt or the Newry and south Down end, and search accordingly, because somebody at one end will not travel to the other.

Where the sugar babies in Down actually are

North Down skews older and more professional than a university city would. Bangor and Holywood have a substantial population of women in their late twenties and thirties in Belfast jobs who live out of the city deliberately, and that is a different proposition from a student population.

The south of the county is younger on average and more mobile, with Newry drawing from both sides of the border. Southern Regional College has a Newry campus, so there is a student element there that North Down does not have.

Downpatrick, Newcastle and the Ards villages are thinner but not empty, and people there are used to driving for an evening out.

Discretion in a county where everyone commutes

North Down's problem is that it is small and everyone is on the same train. Meeting somebody in Bangor when you both commute to Belfast is more visible than it looks.

The obvious answer is to meet in Belfast, about fifteen minutes from Holywood and thirty from Bangor on the train, where neither of you is local and nobody is paying attention. It is the single most useful thing about the county's geography.

In the south, Newry works the same way in reverse: people meet in Belfast or across the border in Dundalk rather than at home.

Give it time. This is a part of the world with a long habit of discretion that predates anything to do with dating, and pushing for a meeting in the first two exchanges triggers exactly the caution you are trying to avoid.

The law here is not the law in the Republic, and it applies to you

This matters more on this page than on any other, because in Northern Ireland the offence sits with the person paying.

County Down is a separate legal jurisdiction from the Republic, so the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017 has no force here. The law that applies is section 15 of the Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Criminal Justice and Support for Victims) Act (Northern Ireland) 2015. It makes it an offence to obtain sexual services from another person in exchange for payment, carrying up to a year in prison on conviction on indictment. Section 15(3) defines payment broadly, covering goods and services given gratuitously or at a discount, so it is not limited to cash.

Advice written for Dublin does not transfer. If you are unsure where a specific arrangement sits, take advice from a solicitor qualified in Northern Ireland. Nothing on this page is legal advice.
